Sinusitis diagnosis usually occurs after a physical exam and comprehensive medical history. Additional tests are only needed if the doctor isn’t sure of the diagnosis, if antibiotics haven’t worked, if other complications are suspected and if surgery may be required. Typical symptoms of sinusitis include: pain and pressure within the face, drainage of a discharge, fever, tenderness on the face and fatigue. A doctor may feel for tenderness within the sinus and also look at the nasal passages for any signs of inflammation. Next, the doctor will ask about your symptoms and try to rule out chances of nasal polyps before diagnosing a patient with a sinus infection. For those with chronic sinus infections (lasting for longer than 8 weeks), other tests may be needed such as CT scan, lab tests or ciliary functioning tests.
