Katherine R. Dean, M.D., is a colon and rectal surgeon with Grandview Colon & Rectal Specialists.

Dr. Dean specializes in the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal (GI) illness, particularly involving the intestines. She performs minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) small intestine and colon resections for the treatment of diverticulitis, colon and rectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and other intestinal pathologies. Dr. Dean surgically treats anorectal disease such as pilonidal abscess, hemorrhoids, anal fissure, abscesses and fistulas. She has a particular interest in the surgical treatment of pelvic floor disorders, such as rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence.

Dr. Dean says there are many varied reasons she chose colon and rectal surgery as her dedicated field, but the one that she believe sums her reasoning up best is that she gets to use very honed technical skills and knowledge to alleviate, and often cure, issues that are debilitating, and sometimes life-threatening. She strives to always treat her patients with the same level of skill and kindness that she wants for her own family and loved ones.

In high school, Dr. Dean was an exchange student in Seville, Spain. She majored in Spanish at the University of Alabama, where she received her undergraduate degree. She speaks medical Spanish. When not at work, Dr. Dean’s favorite place to be is outdoors with her husband, daughters and dog.
