What is an Amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis is a medical procedure that involves removing amniotic fluid from the uterus and then testing or treating it. Amniotic fluid is found in the placenta and is responsible for surrounding and protecting a baby during pregnancy. There are fetal cells and other essential chemicals found in this fluid that the baby produces as it grows. Amniocentesis is not a required exam, but there are a number of reasons why a physician may recommend it or for why a patient may request to have it performed.

Why is it Used?

Amniocentesis is the only medical test that involves taking a sampling of the amniotic fluid so that it may be tested. Because this is the only exam physicians use to examine the amniotic fluid, it offers a completely distinct look at the baby's health and development. When physicians want to get a better look at the baby's growth, health or wellbeing, this type of procedure may be the best course of action. This is because the cells and materials in the amniotic sac are filled with invaluable information.

What Conditions Does it Treat?

Why Amniocentesis is recommended will depend on the specific type that will be performed. Genetic amniocentesis involves testing a sample of the amniotic fluid in search of certain conditions such as spina bifida and Down’s syndrome. Maturity amniocentesis is designed to determine whether or not the lungs are mature enough for the baby to be born. In some circumstances , amniocentesis may be utilized to evaluate the baby's health in search of illness or infection.
