What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the process of putting saline or silicone filled breasts in place into increase or reshape the breasts. In some cases, breast augmentation is completed in order to reshape the malformed breasts. This can mean that the patient wants to have breasts that are even in appearance and shape. The size of the implant depends on what the patient wants as a result. The process is completed surgically and requires a stay in the hospital as well as some recovery time at home, which limits the amount of activity the patient can participate in.

Why is it Used?

There are a number of reasons why physicians might recommend a breast augmentation. Although there are a variety of surgical options that a physician can utilize in order to augment the look and feel of the breasts, there are certain surgical options that will be more advantageous than others.

What Conditions Does it Treat?

In most circumstances, breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure meaning that it is about form rather than function. The reasons that a woman might have for getting breast augmentation surgery are entirely personal, but there are a number of different potential reasons. First and foremost, breast augmentation can enhance the appearance of the breast if the breasts are too small or one is sized differently than the other. It can also help to reconstruct the breast following mastectomy or breast surgery as well as to adjust for other issues that cause changes to the breast such as pregnancy.
