What is a Magnesium Test?

Magnesium is an important electrolyte that helps maintain proper heart, nerve, and muscle function, and also helps strengthen the bones. In addition, magnesium strengthens the immune system and helps regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. A magnesium blood test, also known as a serum magnesium test, measures the amount of magnesium in the blood.

What Can You Expect During Your Magnesium Test?

A magnesium test requires a sample of your blood. During your blood draw, you may experience a slight pinching or pricking sensation from the needle. A stinging or throbbing sensation may briefly persist after the blood is drawn, but this typically resolves quickly. The site of the blood draw may bruise, but that should also fade with time.
