What is a Tilt Table Test?

The tilt table test is used to investigate the cause of fainting spells (syncope). Normally, tilt table tests are recommended for patients who experience multiple unexplained fainting spells, but in some cases where fainting may put a patient at high risk, the test may be performed after only one episode. The test includes an electrocardiogram (EKG) and blood pressure monitoring.

What Can You Expect During a Tilt Table Test?

The tilt table test should take about an hour. In preparation for the test, you will have electrodes attached to your chest, legs, and arms to allow the EKG to monitor your heart’s activity. A blood pressure cuff will be placed on your arm, finger, or both. If needed, you may have an IV line placed in case you need medication.

You will lie flat on a table for about 15 minutes, with straps to keep you securely in place when the table moves. Then, the table is tilted up to simulate standing after lying down by quickly returning you to a vertical position. While you are upright, your cardiovascular response to the change in position will be evaluated by measuring your heart rate and blood pressure for about 45 after the tilt. After the procedure, you should be able to return to your normal daily activities.
