"While medicine, and especially surgery, is oftentimes a very demanding career, I honestly love what I do! My desire is to provide outstanding surgical care with the utmost compassion. While I take the responsibility of my patients' care very seriously, I also try to introduce some humor to help them overcome the fear that is often felt while undergoing surgery.
After growing up in Iowa, my early interest in computers, electronics, and mechanics led me to begin studying to become an Electrical Engineer. During my college experience, I started considering medicine as a career instead. I completed my pre-medical coursework at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Iowa State University before attending the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
While in medical school, I became enthralled with the specialty of general surgery. The ability to potentially "fix" a patient's health problem rather than treating it with medications greatly appealed to me. After an internship in surgery at Creighton University, my training was interrupted for 2 years while I served as a Flight Surgeon in the US Air Force.
After my time as a Flight Surgeon, I absorbed everything I could while completing my surgical residency under the tutelage of some amazing surgeons and human beings at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. The next two years were spent as a Surgeon in the Air Force serving military personnel, their families, and retirees in northern Texas.
I returned home to the Omaha area in 2006. For more than 10 years, I worked as a busy private practice surgeon offering a wide range of surgical care: minimally invasive surgery, colon surgery, hernia repair, breast surgery, weight loss surgery, etc.
While I absolutely loved running my own surgical practice, I also felt a strong desire to share my accumulated knowledge with future surgeons. Therefore, in 2016, I accepted an offer to become a surgeon for CHI Health Clinic and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine. It's been an extremely rewarding change so far!" - Dr. Hovey
