An echocardiogram is a test used to evaluate, monitor and diagnose a variety of ailments. Some include: congenital heart disease, heart murmurs, pericarditis (infection in the sac around the heart), pulmonary hypertension, blood clots, heart failure and atrial fibrillation. This test works great because it gives a more detailed image then a typical x-ray and doesn’t use any radiation. This test evaluates both the chambers and valves of the hearts in a non-invasive way that causes no pain.
There are two types of echnocardiograms: a Transthoracic Echocardiogram and a Transesophageal Echocardiogram. Typically, the transthoracic is the most popular and is administered by a trained sonographer. A transducer is used that releases the sound waves on the ribs near the breast bone. Other images will be taken around the upper abdomen and breasts. The echoes that are picked up are transmitted as electric waves. These waves are then converted into moving pictures of the heart. This test allows a doctor to see the heart beating and determine any abnormalities.
