What is H. pylori Breath Test?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria infection of the stomach is a common cause of peptic ulcers. The H. pylori breath test is a non-invasive way to detect the presence of H. pylori bacteria in both adults and children, and may be recommended if a peptic ulcer is suspected.
What Can You Expect During Your H. pylori Breath Test?
You will be asked to swallow tagged carbon molecules that can be taken as a pill, given in liquid form as a drink, or eaten in a soft food like pudding. If H. pylori bacteria are present in your stomach, the carbon will be released when the stomach breaks down the tagged carbon solution. The released carbon is processed by the body and released in the breath. Your doctor will ask you to exhale into a bag where the exhaled carbon molecules can be measured.
